China könnte bald Treibstoff-Ethanol nicht nur aus Biomasse herstellen, sondern auch aus Kohle

Gemäß dem 13. Fünfjahresplan Chinas für Energie soll das Land bis 2020 300 Millionen t Treibstoff-Ethanol aus Biomasse produzieren und damit 150 Millionen t fossilen Treibstoff ersetzen. Allerdings wurde inzwischen auch die Herstellung von Treibstoff-Ethanol aus Kohle verbessert, und China hatte Ende 2016 nachgewiesene Kohlereserven von 1,6 Billionen Tonnen. Die bevorzugte, am CAS Dalian Institute for Chemical Physics ausgearbeitete Route verwendet Synthesegas, mit dem Dimethylester über einen Zeolith-Katalysator zu Methylacetat carbonyliert und das Methylacetat zu Ethanol über einen Cu/ZnO-Katalysator hydriert wird. Bis 2018 wird die Shaanxi Yanchang Group auf diesem Weg Produktionsanlagen für 300.000 t Treibstoff-Ethanol fertigstellen, eine 100.000 t-Anlage ist bereits in Betrieb. Analysten von Orient Securities gehen davon aus, dass die Kosten für Ethanol aus Biomasse zwischen 4700-5600 Yuan/Tonne liegen, während die Kosten für Ethanol aus Kohle lediglich 4000-4200 Yuan/Tonne betragen. Es ist also nicht unwahrscheinlich, daß ein erheblicher Teil des chinesischen Treibstoff-Ethanols 2020 nicht aus Biomasse, sondern aus Kohle hergestellt wird.

CAS QIBEBT produces mussel adhesive analogues with underwater bonding strength up to 17.3 MPa

Based on the structural elements of mussel adhesive protein, the group of WAN Xiaobo at CAS Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT) produced analogues based on PVP and catechol groups which, after underwater curing, reached a bonding strength of 1.6 MPa. After substituting PVP by PVA and heating at 140 ℃ for 20 min, a bonding strength of up to 17.3 MPa was achieved.

China’s WuXi Pharma Tech acquires Munich-based Crelux, a protein company

Crelux has developed a bi-turbo vector system which allows to express target proteins in parallel in E.coli and insect cells from the same plasmid construct. This procedure helps to produce pure proteins for x-ray structure analysis and for drug discovery purposes. The acquisition is in line with the rapid development of WuXi European operations.

Ministry of Agriculture cracked down on illicit transgenic crop cultivation

According to a statement on April 13, the ministry has established a routine monitoring system aimed at the discovery of illicit cultivation of transgenic vegetables. Three cases concerning transgenic corn seed were discovered in Xinjiang, Gansu and Hainan, the plants grown on 1.000 and 100 acres, respectively, were destroyed and the field owners were punished.

Guangzhou human embryo CRISPR study sparks controversy

A study at Guangzhou Medical University which used human embryos to make them resistant to HIV infection using CRISPR/CAS genome editing tools has led to discussions in China about strengthened legal supervision of such expeeriments. While the Guangzhou work was in line with China’s current regulations, some researchers saw a need for more precise regulations concerning the targets of such research and the ethics surrounding early human embryos.

Chinese Space Center carries out micro-g 3D printing tests in Europe

A team of China’s Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization has completed 93 parabolic test flights in France leading to at least 22 seconds of microgravity. These flights were facilitated by the German DLR. During the flights, various 3D printing experiments with fiber-reinforced polymers were done using Chinese equipment and processes.
