China and Africa cooperate on anti-desertification program

CAS Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography which has long-standing experience in desertification control and ecological restoration signed a memorandum with the the Panafrican Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW) to support the African Great Green Wall initiativon by staff training and research of agro-sylvo-pastoral ecosystem monitoring and evaluation, as well as the development of a monitoring and evaluation system through a Geographic Information System and an Early Warning System.

CAS Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology (TIB) and Challenge Group to cooperate on animal feed enzymes

The Challenge Group was founded in 1997 by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and has developed a series of over 100 kinds of enzyme products such as high temperature phytase, xylanase and glucanase, distributed to 25 provinces , autonomous regions and exported to Europe, America and Southeast Asia. TIB will contribute by HTS screening and other high-tech developments to such innovative products.

Researchers at Third Military Medical University find clues to resveratrol action

Resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, reduces the risk of heart disease. Researchers around MI Mantian have found in mice that resveratrol can remodel the gut microbiota including increasing the Bacteroidetes-to-Firmicutes ratios, significantly inhibiting the growth of Prevotella, and increasing the relative abundance of Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Akkermansia. The changed intestinal flora reduced levels of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), a known contributor to the development of atherosclerosis, by inhibiting production of trimethylamine, its precursor.

China expects industry standards will help „precision medicine“ products and services to eventually reach sales of one trillion Yuan

Developments are under the Ministry of Science and the National Health and Family Planning Commission, but private organisations are also involved. The focus of standardization is on sequencing technology, large-data handling and expert systems for diagnosis, treatment and prevention. In China’s large population, accurate health care is a systematic project, mainly to determine the heterogeneity and subsequent approach to patient groups, thereby directly and indirectly involving related industries. Precision medicine has three levels, the basic level being based on gene sequencing. The medium level mainly involves immunotherapy, strengthening the immune cell functions. The highest level is to edit genes and genomes, e. g. in cancer by transforming cancer cells back to normal cells. in 2012 the number of Chinese cancer patients was 3.065 million, accounting for about one-fifth of global incidence, and cancer deaths were 2.205 million, accounting for about 1/4 of the global number of cancer deaths.

Dr Yong-Jun LIU to be head of global R&D at Sanofi from April 1

Dr LIU is an expert in immunology and has studied in Birmingham where he also received his postdoctoral training. In 1991, he joined DNAX Schering Ploug Research Center and moved in 2002 to the Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He later became VP and Chief Scientist of Baylor Research Institute and Senior VP of MedImmune Inc. The Chinese media celebrate the career of this scientist to become head of R&D of a global Western drug company.

Guangzhou forms „International Alliance for Stem Cell and Precision Medicines“

China’s first stem cell company, founded in 2009, is Guangzhou Saliai Stem Cell Science and Technology Co., and member of the Guangdong Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Association. Guangdong Province has invested about 200 million Yuan in this field over the past two years. The alliance is intended to facilitate international exchange in a field of industry which is valued at 100 billion $ by 2020.

China’s top advisory committee suggests improved public education on S&T

At China’s Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held on March 24 in Beijing, it was suggested to build science museums, recruit scientists for science education, e. g., for teenagers and rural residents, and use information technology to reach this aim.

CAS Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT) develops high performance aluminum-graphite dual-ion battery (AGDIB)

Compared with conventional LIBs, AGDIB shows an obvious advantage in production cost (~ 50% lower), specific density (~1.3-2.0 times), and energy density (~1.6-2.8 times). It delivers a specific energy density of ~222 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 132 W kg−1, and ~150 Wh kg−1 at 1200 W kg−1, as compared to commercial LIB (~200 Wh kg−1 at 50 W kg−1, and ~100 Wh kg−1 at 1000 W kg−1) and electrochemical capacitors (~5 Wh kg−1 at 5000 W kg−1)

China produced 2,16 mill tons of bio-ethanol in 2014

According to a White Paper on China Industrial Biotechnology 2014″ published by the Tianjin Academy of Sciences, China is now the world’s 3d largest producer of fuel bio-ethanol after the USA and Brazil. Pilot studies on the use of non-food crops are underway. China’s biodiesel capacity is estimated at about 3 – 3.5 million tons, but due to limited supply of raw materials, plant capacity is idle, and the huge market demand is presently not met”

WIPO sees innovation shift towards Northern Asia

In its report on global IP applications in 2015, WIPO sees USA still in lead but observes a shift towards Japan, South Korea and China. International patent applications filed under WIPO’s Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) were up by 1.7 percent to 218,000 in 2015, the slowest growth in five years, with the United States extending its long-standing position as the top source. China’s PCT applications exceeded 29,800 in 2015, an increase of 16.8 percent, ranking third for the third year behind the United States and Japan. The three top filing companies were China’s Huawei Technologies, followed by U.S.-based Qualcomm and China’s ZTE Corp. Huawei topped the list since 2013.

China starts building infrastructure for its gravitational wave research project

Sun Yat-sen University, initiator of the program called Tianqin”, held a foundation stone laying ceremony for a 30,000-square-meter research building, a 10,000-square-meter ultra-quiet cave laboratory and a 5,000-square-meter obseravation sation on its Zhuhai campus. With an estimated cost of 15 billion yuan (2.3 billion U.S. dollars), Tianqin is scheduled to be carried out in four stages over the next 15 to 20 years, ultimately launching three high-orbit satellites to detect gravitational waves”

CAS Guangzhou Hospital breeds pigs expressing exclusively human insulin

Using CRISPR/Talen technology, homozygous cell lines for pigs producing human insulin (alanine 30 in insulin B chain exchanged for threonine) and used these cells for the generation of pigs producing human insulin only, as confirmed by HPLC and tandem mass spectroscopy.
