Chinese team makes pigs produce human serum albumin after CRISPR-based gene modification
A team around ZHANG Pumin from Beijing Proteome Research Center and several universities and military universities modified porcine albumin into human albumin and used CRISPR technology to express this gene in pigs. Approximately 300 embryos were implanted in 10 female pigs, of which five pigs gave birth to 16 cubs. The cubs showed no signs of any unusual health problem. By genotypic analysis, researchers found that the 16 cubs carried the desired gene sequence human blood serum protein. The modified allele was successfully passed on to the offspring. It is expected that these results will facilitate the use of pigs and other large domestic animals for the production of biomedical products.

Chinese group changes color of roses by electrical signals
After feeding a synthetic polymer PEDOT-S through the stem to roses, the polymer was absorbed by the vascular system and allowed to transmit electrical signals without interference in water and nutrient delivery. When the outside voltage was changed, the color of the rose could be changed.

Xinjiang Institute of Physical and Chemical Technology finds new active agents from medicinal plants
Within a project for the Central Asian distribution of medicinal plant resources used in traditional medicine, 11 kinds of characteristic plant resources were identified with 24 new compounds, and a rapid and efficient separation technology was established to identify novel terpenoids and alkaloids.

Team at CAS SIBS creates mice from two eggs, without use of sperm
The group of LI Jinsong from CAS SIBS in Shanghai promoted cell division of a mature egg through chemical means and created a line of cells. After modifying one cell by removing two genes, they injected the cell into another egg as part of artificial fertilization process. More than 15 out of 100 embryos finally developed into mice which were healthy and showed no difference in development and fertility from the ones that were naturally conceived. Attempts to create embryos from two sperm cells failed.

According to the National Defense Science and Industry Bureau, China has now 140 satellites stable in orbit, second only to the USA. Chinese satellites cover > 10 million remote sensing data distributions and 30 million satellite TV broadcast users. China’s Beidou is expected to cover most countries along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road by 2018, and offer global coverage by 2020.

UK opens 100.000 genome project to Chinese partner
The UK government project has signed a contrdact with Shanghai Biotechnology Co. to join in models and tumor control paired analysis reporting tools, helping to more efficiently resolve genomic data and rapid identification causative mutation rare diseases and cancer driven mutation. This is expected to enhance the quality of genomic data interpretation, the researchers deepen understanding of the disease and to develop more targeted treatment programs.

The procedure is based on micro-extraction in ceramic metal oxide hollow fibers combined with GC-MS and allows to analyze illegal food additives such as melamine, pesticides and organic pollutants.

Researchers at CAS Institute of Physics develop novel nanographene-based flash memory
In a nanographene-based charge trapping memory, electrons and other charge carriers are trapped in tiny defects in graphene (“nanographene islands”). These can be produced by plasma etching. By this method, a 9 V memory window was developed which was maintained even after 1000 program/erase cycles.

China will launch a personalized medicine R&D program in „135“ (13th Five-years plan).
As disclosed during a Health Industry Innovation Forum on Oct. 28, the Chinese government will install a personalized medicine R&D program in the next 5-years plan. The plans for „precision medicine“, as the Chinese term goes, will include the construction of medical centers of excellence including demonstration centers, and overall expenditures in the range of 60 billion Yuan before 2030 are said to be planned for this field.

„135“ will put a strong focus on photovoltaic, biomass and wind energy
The upcoming 13th Five-Years Plan is expected to boost investment in biomass, photovoltaics and wind energy. China’s installed photovoltaic capacity reached 30 Gwatt of photovoltaic power plants + 5,71 GW of distributed PV power generation. It is expected that installed photovoltaic capacity in China could reach 100 Gwatt by 2020. Wind power installed capacity was 9,16 GWatt by mid-2015 and shows double-digit growth.
