Vier neue Elemente bekommen nun auch chinesische Namen/Four new chemical elements get official Chinese names

Das Periodensystem gilt auch für China, aber die Schreibung und Aussprache der chemischen Elemente ist verschieden von der unseren. So heißt C (Kohlenstoff) 碳 tan, und H (Wasserstoff) 氢 qing. Die chinesische Akademie der Wissenschaften, die zentrale Sprachkommission und das Nationale Komitee für wissenschaftliche und technische Begriffe haben sich nun auf die Schreibweise für vier synthetische Transactinoide geeinigt. Element 113, Nihonium (Nh), heißt auf Chinesisch钅尔 (ni), Element 115, Moscovium (Mc) heißt镆 (mo), Element 117, Tennessine (Ts) heißt石田(tian), und Element 118, Oganesson (Og) heißt (ao). Das gesamte Periodensystem auf Chinesisch findet sich bei Wikipedia unter https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/元素周期表 The Chinese Academy of Sciences, the State Language Commission and China’s National Committee for Terms in Sciences and Technologies jointly have announced that elements 113, 115, 117 and 118 were given official Chinese names. The Chinese name of the element 115 – Moscovium – is an existing Chinese character 镆” ( pronounced as mo), but three new Chinese characters were created for the rest. Based on the principle of similar pronunciations, “钅尔” (ni) and  “石田” (tian) were given to element 113, Nihonium, and element 117, Tennessine, respectively. The Chinese symbol of element 118 – Oganesson – will be pronounced “ao”.”

First Nobel Prize (Physiology or Medicine) ever for China: to Mrs Professor Yoyo TU for development of artemisinin as Malaria therapy

Professor TU is the head of the Chinese Academy of Traditional Medical Sciences in Beijing. Based on findings of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the treatment of malaria, she started to extract the plant Artemisia anna for active components and was the first to discover artemisinin as the active principle. Artemisinin is successfully used to treat early stages of malaria infections in man and animals.

CAS Chengdu Institute of Biology group develops pathway for n-caproate from lactate

The group around TAO Yong has used a unique microbiome that metabolizes lactate rather than ethanol for the production of n-caproate production. The microbial community was obtained from a fermentation pit used for the production of Chinese strong-flavour liquor (CSFL) and consisted to > 70 % of Clostridia. This microbiome was able to produce n-caproate at concentrations as high as 23.41 g/L at a maximum rate of 2.97 g/L/d in batch culture without in-line extraction

CAS Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology develops Pichia system for sugar alcohol manufacture

The system developed by the group of MA Yanhe is based on the construction of a mutant library of Pichia anomala followed by protoplast fusion of fluorescence-labeled mutants and a chromogenic assay for high sugar alcohol producers. High-performance producers of D- arabitol, D-ribitol or D-xylitol from glucose or xylose were obtained, with maximum yields of 0,77 g/g sugar.

Bio-Environmental Materials Co. in Jiangsu’s Suqian starts construction of 50.000 t PLA plant

The Taiwan-owned enterprise plans a total investment of 3.3 billion yuan and the site will cover 150 acres. Team at Southwest University improves silk by genetic engineering

The group of XIA Qingyou at the university’s laboratory of silkworm genomic biology modified the mechanical properties of silk by overexpressing ER-type calcium ion ATP synthase, the secondary structure of silk fibers can be changed, thereby substantially increasing silk fiber strength, elongation, toughness and elastic modulus.

CAS SIBS Shanghai obtain high yields of stevioside by E coli-based synthetic biology

The group of WANG Yong at SIBS Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology succeeded to design a biosynthetic pathway based on 4 modules which were separately optimized and led to good yields of the desired steviosides. The membrane-associated cytochrome P450 enzyme KAH was identified as the rate-limiting step. To relieve this bottleneck, an engineered CYP714A2 from Arabidopsis thaliana replacing KAHn2 significantly improved the yield of steviol to 15.47 mg l-1. Furthermore, by subsequently incorporating the UGT module, 10.03 mg l-1 of rebaudioside A, the major component of native stevia extracts, was successfully produced in shake flask among various kinds of SGs.
