Haier in Tsingtao: vom Weltmarktführer in “weißer Ware” zum Laborausrüster

Haier baut derzeit in Tsingtao, Provinz Shandong, auf eta 400,000 m2 einen Biomedizin-Park als ein “open innovation ecosystem”, und in dessen Mitte das Haier Innovation Center. Der Marktführer für Kühlketten will die technische Kompetenz des Unternehmens stärker auf Bereiche hoher Wertschöpfung ausrichten, z. B. auf die Gerätetechnik von Bio- und Zellbanken, und dabei auch interdisziplinär und international zusammenarbeiten. Haier, dessen Name noch an die zweite Silbe des früheren joint-venture-Partners Liebherr erinnert, machte 2016 mit etwa 70.000 Mitarbeitern 200 Mrd. Yuan Umsatz (ca. 26 Mrd. €) und ist Weltmarktführer für Haushaltsgroßgeräte. 2016 übernahm Haier die Hausgerätesparte GE Appliance von GE Electric.

Next 5-year plan will further stimulate biomass to energy conversion

Over the past 10 years, this topic was substantially funded but mostly reached only pilot-scale. According to plans, power generation from biomass should reach 13 million kW by 2015, with the next target as 20 million kW. To this end, 200 biomass power plants will be supported by up to 90 billion Yuan investment provisioned to regional biomass-related industry.

Fuzhou CreMab Pharmaceutical Co. and Fujian-based partners build independent manufacturing base for therapeutic antibodies

With a total investment of 730 million yuan, a therapeutic monoclonal antibody pilot plant was built which offers a scale of up to 2000 L for the production of monoclonal antibodies for clinical tests and will be further scaled up to 80.000L, enough to produce 3 tons of monoclonal antibody protein (anti tumor) per year. The plant is located in Fujian’s Sanming Hi-Tech Zone.

CAS Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica obtains fibroblast to cardiomyocyte differentiation by small-molecule stimulation

A team from Tongji University and various institute of the CAS in Shanghai could show with mouse embryonic fibroblasts in vivo that the addition of 3 – 6 small molecules was enough to transdifferentiate these cells into cardiomyocytes which showed rhythmic contraction, cardiac-specific gene expression and cardiac-like electrophysiological characteristics.

Ren Sheng Biological Energy Technology Co. to build 10.000 t/a 2nd generation bio-diesel plant

In cooperation with Foster Wheeler (Hebei) Engineering Co., the Changzhou-based company (常州仁晟生物能源科技有限公司) has established a process which uses waste oil pretreatment followed by hydrogenation, decarbonylation, decarboxylation and isomerization using a novel solid catalyst. The oxygen-free product consists of straight and branched paraffins, has a freezing point of – 50 °C and a cetane number of ≥80. It can be used as aviation biofuel.

Group at Tsinghua University solves splicosome structure

Splicosomes are resonsible for correct gene expression and involved in up to 1/3d of genetic disorders. A group around Yingong SHI at Tsinghua University succeeded to solve the x-ray structure of this hitherto elusive group of enzymes. Chinese commentaries consider this finding as relevant for a Nobel prize.

A polyhedral nanocage can store acetylene under ambient conditions

A mesoporous material, [Cu4(tddb)·(H2O)4]n·(solvent)x, developed by HONG Maochun and YUAN Daqiang at Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter can store around 200 cm3/g of acetylene at ambient conditions and may be a good candidate for safe storage and transportation of acetylene.

Boehringer Ingelheim’s Shanghai biopharmaceutical plant nears completion

The JV between Boehringer-Ingelheim and Shanghai Zhangjiang Bio-Pharmaceutical Base Development Co. which offers also contract production of biologics for Chinese companies will start full production by 2017. At present, the plant provides samples for toxicity testing and early clinical studies.
