The material is based on gold and silveer nanorods (Au@Ag NR) and shows excellent peroxidase-like oxidation capacity between pH 4.0 – 6.5. They can replace peroxidase in chromogenic glucose assays based on glucose oxidase.

The device, developed by Feng ZHOU at CAS Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, is based on polydimethylsiloxane decorated with a hydroresponsive polyelectrolygte brush. Upon increasing the humidity or immersing in water, the brush swells and the resulting lateral pressure leads to a bending movement of the rubber within a fraction of a second. In the preparation of uniform crystalline thin-films from perovskite used in solar cells, the group around Shuping PANG at CAS QIBEBT found that methylamine gas at ambient temperature is able to reconstruct defects in the perovskite crystal structure of the thin film within seconds. The investigations are done jointly with Weihua Solar in Xiamen and have been patented.

Prof. FANG Zhen and his team of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) conducted a study aiming to directly produce biodiesel from oils with high acid value without any pretreatment using activated nanosized Mg-Al hydrotalcite (HT-Ca). With 5 wt% HT-Ca, 160 oC, 30/1 methanol/oil molar ratio and 4 h, 93.4% Jatropha biodiesel yield was obtained with an acid value (AV) of 6.3 mg KOH/g with 4 cycles (biodiesel yield > 86%). Soybean biodiesel yield reached 92.9% even from oil with high AV of 12.1 mg KOH/g.
