Systems biology may hold clues for the effect of TCM

A consortium led by the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology investigated genetic networks related to Liuwei Dihuang (LWDH), a classic Chinese medicinal formula that has been used for more than a thousand years in China and is comprised of 6 Chinese herbs. Through text mining, the team built interaction networks among LWDH-interacting genes and found synergistic effects among the gene products.

CAS Wuhan Botanical Garden establishes LOTUS-DB, an integrative database for Nelumbo nucivera (sacred lotus)

In 2013, two publications reported the sequencing of the full genome, on which LOTUS-DB was constructed. It contains comprehensive information on the annotation, gene function and expression for the sacred lotus. The information will facilitate users to efficiently query and browse genes, graphically visualize genome and download a variety of complex data information on genome DNA, coding sequence (CDS), transcripts or peptide sequences, promoters and markers.

National Health and Family Planning Commission plans dereguatlions concerning stem cell applications

It is widely beliebed that China has not yet established uniform quality standards and inspection units for approval procedures and monitoring rules of clinical research and applications of stem cells. Administration officials at the China Food and Drug Administration, academia and industry become ready to enhance stem cell research and translation into hospitals.

CAS Kunming Institute of Zoology reveals aspects of early human migration into SW China

60,000 years ago, humans arrived in Southeast Asia, mainly along the shorelines. However, it is unclear, according to archaeological and genetic research, how humans entered the northern parts of Southeast Asia, including China. Using mitochondrial DNA from populations in Burma, Myanmar and China, migratory events from Burma to southwest China’s (such as M54, M55 and M84) 25,000 to 10,000 years ago could be shown.

Group at CAS Wuhan Botanical Garden unravel molecular genetics of anthocyanin biosynthesis in blood-fleshed peach

The group of Yuepeng HAN have found that a special R2R3-type transcription factor regulates if peaches of thePrunus persica (L.) Batsch variety, native to China, develop into yellow or blood-fleshed fruits. In white-fleshed fruits, the expression of this transcription factor PpMYB10.1 cannot be activated due to the lack of expression of a BL gene; in blood-fleshed fruits, BL acts with PpNAC1 to activate the transcription of PpMYB10.1, but their transactivation activity was repressed in the presence of the repressor PpSPL1.

CAS Institute of Micrdobiology researchers elucidate D-gulosamine biosynthetic in streptothricin biosynthesis

Streptothricins are atypical aminoglycoside antibiotics possessing antibacterial and antifungal activities. Zhongshengmycin, a product of streptothricins, is widely used as agriculture antibiotic for crop protection. A defect of this product is that it contains various streptothricin components which make product quality control very difficult. The group of CHEN Yihua has elucidated the biosynthetic pathway of the D-gulosamine moiety and found two novel enzymatic catalysts were involved in this process.

CAS Shenyang Institute of Automation achieves ultra-fine print of solar cell gate electrodes

Using improved ink-print technology for a nano silver paste printing process at high-speed, high-precision control and on large arrays, crystalline silicon solar cells could be manufactured with an improved solar cell conversion efficiency of 0.6%, reduced silver material consumption by 40 percent, resulting in reduced operating costs 0.60 ~ 0.80 yuan / piece.

QIBEBT team develops self-powered sensor-based bio-fuel cell

The team around Houchuan TAO has used FAD-dependant glucose dehydrogenase (FAD-GDH) and laccase (laccase) to build a high-performance glucose / oxygen biological, with a maximum output power density of 98 μW cm-2, and an open circuit potential of up to 0.78 V. Further studies showed that Cu2 + which inhibits the potential of the fuel cell, can be removed by L- cysteine (L-Cys), thus effectively restoring fuel cell activity.

Group at USTC discovers earliest bread residues in Xinjiang,

The group with ZHENG Zuiping as first author reports unearthing a large number of remains and funerary objects including food remains from a cemetery located on the Turpan Basin south of the Gobi desert. Using infrared analysis of starch-like substances, cell analysis of grains and epidermal cell analysis showed that the remains are processed pasta made from wheat and barley which were ground into a powder mixed with cooked food; the composition is dense, indicating unfermented, flatbread similar to today’s.
