The group of Fuwei LI succeeded to substitute the noble element catalysts mostly used for this reaction by a nano-cobalt coated acidic HZSM-5 zeolite. Selectivity was 90 %, and the catalyst could be run stably over days.

Jiangnan University wins one out of 14 national gold awards for α-ketoglutarate production by engineered yeast
The group of Jian CHEN patented this technology based on a metabolically engineered yeast in 2010. In the meantime, this technology has been widely applied for the production of this compound which is used in medicine, food and cosmetics.

CAS SIBS Shanghai cure genetic diseases in mouse germ cells using the CDRISPR-Cas9 system
Using a mouse strain suffering from cataracts, the group around Jinsong LI at SIBS Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology isolated spermatogonial stem cells from these mice and treated them with CRISPR-Cas9 technologies. After transplantation of the treated cells in the testes of recipient mice, 100 % completely healthy mice were obtained, suggesting a new procedure for gene therapy.

CAS SIBS Shanghai identifies Clostridium pathway for xylose induction
The group around Weihong JIANG identified a three-component system which is responsible for D-xylose sensing and transport in Clostridium beijerinckii. Using bioinformatic analysis, a system composed of XylFII-LytS-YesN was identified for signal transduction in the presence of xylose, inducing xylose uptake and metabolism.

Sino-African Joint Research Center launched in Kenya
Built at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and financed by the CAS, the center will focus on biodiversity and ecological conservation. At present, 24 young Africans are studying in China on a CAS scholarship to prepare for work in this center. In addition, China has financed the establishment of a botanical garden in Kenya.

Shanghai Fermentation Exhibition celebrates China’s achievements in fermentation.
The 3 day exhibition from Dec. 3 – 5, organized by the China Fermentation Industry Association, exhibits on 16.000 m2. From 2000 to 2011, China’s production of fermented products grew from 2.6 to 13 million t, with exports of a value of 3.4 billion US-$. China leads the world market in the production of glutamate, citric acid and sorbitol. At present, overcapacities, high energy consumption and pollution issues force the industry to look for new markets such as the dairy industry and improved technology.

A new highland variant of barley yields 5,3 kg/ha

Qingdao to beome core area of the Chinese bioindustry
The municipal government of Qingdao has decided to increase the number of industry parks within 5 – 10 years to a total of 60. In accord with the National Development and Reform Commission, biotechnology, IT, marine and aviation products will form the core of these industry parks.
