China’s State Council issues the “Energy Development Strategy Action Plan 2014 – 2020”
The plan contains 5 strategic tasks: 1. enhance independent energy supplies (clean use of coal, increase in domestic oil and natural gas production, provide emergency reserve), 2. revolutionize and lower energy consumption, 3. optimize energy structure (less coal, more natural gas and nuclear energy, more renewables), 4. expand international cooperation and participate in global energy governance, and 5. promote innovation in energy technology. In renewables, a focus is on non-grain fuel, biodiesel and microalgae.

The target is to increase fish production in a sustainable manner. Main partner ist he CAS Institute of Hydrobiology, Wuhan, and students working on this issue will obtain a dual degree from CAS and the University of Ottawa.

China’s major center for microbial culture collections hosts > 46.000 patent strains
According to an interview of deputy director Lijun XIONG of CGMCC (China General Microbiological Culture Collection Center), the Center, located at the CAS Institute of Microbiology in Beijing and founded in 1979, a signatory of the Budapest Treaty in 1995, also hosts a gene library for about 10.000 strains. Stocks are usually preservied in liquid nitrogen.

„Nature Index 2014“ finds increasing role of CAS and other Chinese institutions in global research.
Nature has ranked CAS as No. 6, shortly behand the Max-Planck-Society, in global scientific output, as measured by the number of publications in 68 Nature-associated magazines. CAS in 2013 published 165 papers in these magazines, as compared to Harvard University with 387 papers. Nine Chinese institutions were placed in the top 200, up from three in 2013.

Chinese team completes genome sequencing of Sichuan snub-nosed monkey
The study was lead by LI Ming from the CAS Institute of Zoology, Beijing. This monkey is specialized in eating leaves and seeds and has a special stomach compartment to digest such food. The researchers also tested the microbiome of this animal and found a closer relation to cattle than to humans.

Anke Biotechnology licenses acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF) from Whenzou University
Anhui’s Anke Biotechnology Co. has already licensed KGF-2 (lyophilized recombinant human keratinocyte growth factor-2). The licensing of aFGF is to develop technology for diabetic foot treatment. China has 114 million diabetic patients, over 30% of all patients have skin lesions, one of the most typical and most harmful symptoms of diabetic foot. 3% to 6% of diabetic patients have foot ulcers, and 70% of patients require surgery. Amputation rate of diabetics is > 10 %

BGI Shenzhen offers open plant and animal breeding platform to Chinese SMEs
In a recent agricultural fair at Shenzhen, BGI offered to build a genotyping, gene and genome mining platform which can be used by SMEs for plant or animal molecular breeding. About 20 breeding companies are said to have expressed interest.

BGI and Tianjin Binhai Industrial Research Institute launch genetic test for birth defects
Birth defects in China are about 16 million per year and increasing. The test can detect over 600 singe-gene recessive genetic factors in women before pregnancy or during pregnancy from blood. By comparing the genetics of both spouses, it is hoped that the overall incidence of birth defects can be lowered

CAS Wuhan Botanical Garden: metabolic engineering of yeast for amorphadine overproduction
Using methods of flux analysis, S. cerevisiae variants were engineered which reached an up to 10fold overproduction of the terpene model compound amorphadiene. Corresponding authors are WANG Yong and ZHANG Yangsheng at the Key Laboratory for Plant Germplasm Improvement and Specialty Agriculture.

CAS Hefei Institutes of Physical Science open SPF center for transgenic mice
The center hosts over 30 GEM mice strains including strains carrying common cancer genes such as p53, Rb, Cdkn2a, EGFR, KRAS. Head of the center is Dr LIN Chu, a CAS “hundred talents” researcher on animal tumor models and epigenetics. The center also hosts strong MRI imaging capacities.
