Chinese will probe plant life on the moon

According to ZHANG Yuanxun, an engineering researcher at the Center of Space Exploration at Chongqing University, China’s Chang’e 4 lunar probe scheduled for 2018 will carry a 3-kilogram “moon-surface mini ecosphere” of 16 cm diameter and 18 cm height. Made of a special aluminum alloy, the probe will carry silkworm eggs, seeds from potatoes and cress, as well as water, soil, air and scientific research tools. Natural light on the surface of the moon will also be carried into the vessel through light pipes to assist the growth of the plants inside. The sprouting and blooming of the plants and the incubation of the silkworm eggs will be live-streamed to people all over the world using cameras inside the vessel.

CAS Institute of Microbiology clarifies function of complex pathway Streptomyces promoter functions

The group of ZHANG Lixin used gene silencing and other techniques to clarify the roles of promoters in Streptomyces secondary metabolite production in S. avermitilis, using lycopene production as a model. Based on a single cell reporter gene (sfGFP) and flow cytometry, a synthetic module of regulatory elements could be designed which activates S. avermitilis gene cluster expression, greatly improving the yield and efficiency of lycopene production.

CAS Ningbo Institute of Material Technology and Engineering develops cellulose-based “sponge” for oil-water separation

The team regenerated cellulose by co-dissolving a pore-forming agent resulting in a nanopore, macroporous cellulose sponge matrix which could be used to separate surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsion. Without chemical modification, this sponge had special wetting properties and could be used for oil-air, or underwater applications. China launches high-definition reconnaissance satellite

A Long March-2D carrier launched Gaofen-9, a high-definition earth observation satellite, from the launch pad at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Jiuquan, northwest China’s Gansu Province, its cameras have a resolution of < 1 m. It will be used for land surveys, city planning, crop yield estimates and disaster prevention, further for key national strategies such as the Belt and Road Initiative and national defense.

Group at CAS University of Science and Technology develops catalyst which splits wate rat visible light

The group of DU Pingwu used a crystalline Ni2P catalyst which anchors semiconductor nanorods. After excited by light, the Ni2P catalyst generates an active electron which reduces water and generates hydrogen. When the system was excited at 450nm, the apparent quantum yield reached ~41%. One milligram material could produce 1200umol hydrogen per hour.

China builds its own satellite navigation system BDS

At least 80 % of apps and services available in China were compatible with the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), an alternative to US-operated GPS. Services based on the BDS are used not only for industrial purposes such as geographic surveying, traffic monitoring and agriculture, but also for car navigation and positioning services on mobile phones. Annual revenue is reported as 134 billion Yuan in 2014. China launched the 18th and 19th BDS satellites in July, for 2020 a complete set of 35 satellites is planned.

Xinjiang Province launches use of BASF’s Biovio for mulch applications

By the end of 2014, the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corp and BASF launched in Xinjiang the biggest ever project for Ecovio mulch plots with a total area of 1700 acres. At present, cotton, corn, sugar beets, potatoes, squash and tomato crops are involved as a pilot project. In 2014, more than 4,700 acres of farmland in Xinjiang used mulch, accounting for nearly one-seventh of the national area using film protection.

Oral and intestinal flora hold clues for rheumatoid arthritis pathology

A team at Beijing Union Medical College Hospital, CAMS, and BGI found that, compared to healthy people, oral and intestinal flora in rheumatoid arthritis patients have significant differences in redox conditions, iron, sulfur, zinc and arginine transport and metabolism as well as in rheumatoid arthritis-associated antigens, suggesting that the abnormal flora plays an important role in the pathophysiology of rheumatoid arthritis and may be directly involved in the disease.

China’s biggest drone CH-5 makes maiden flight

The countries biggest unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) so far, the CH-5 has a wingspan of 20 meters, a maximum takeoff weight of 3 tons, amaximum payload of around 900 kilograms and an endurance of more than 30 hours at low- and medium-altitude. The aircraft is designed to perform reconnaissance, surveillance, targeting, intelligence gathering, electronic warfare, border patrol, island defense and anti-terrorism missions.
