Chinese consortium reaches milestone on plant DNA barcoding
A 22 member group of universities and institutes of the CAS has used the seed and DNA materials collected from the Southwest China Wildlife Germplasm Bank to establish a major plant DNA database. Barcoding was done on 10076 samples, covering 196 families 1292 genera and 3463 species. 5 DNA barcode fragments were used: ITS/ITS2, rbcL, matK and trnH. More than 74,000 DNA barcode sequences entered into a reference database with 110,000 integrated plant photos, for a national wild plant identification information platform.

CAS Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology develops biomimetic nanocarrier for cancer therapy
The group of Lintao CAI and colleagues has constructed an artificial red blood cell made up from a polymer, hemoglobin and a cationic phospholipid, loaded with doxorubicin. The biomimetic nano-system possesses oxygen-like and oxygen-releasing functions similar to red blood cells and transfers oxygen to the inside of cancer cells, intervening with mitochondrial metabolism and increasing intracellular ATP- and reactive oxygen species (ROS) content. Lethal effects on cancer cells increased by 438%, compared to free adriamycin.

CAS Zhengzhou Fruit Research Institute reports genetic basis for peach aroma characteristics
The group around Lirong WANG has analaysed 12 gene regions associated with the characteristic taste and appearance of peaches, based on genome sequencing of 129 modern peach cultivars. For example, the acidity of a peach may be affected by the variation of plant hormone transporter gene expression, and the peache’s shape may be determined by the expression of apoptosis related proteins.

CAS Institute of Microbiology develops novel in-vitro pathogen detection system
The group of Chunbo LOU, together with the Peking iGEM team, developed a novel paired dCas9 reporter system. As a proof of concept, they successfully distinguished Mtb genome markers. The paired dCas9 reporter system is programmed by single guide RNAs complementary to the upstream and downstream segments of a target DNA sequence, respectively. When substrate DNA containing the two segment-sequences in proximity are detected and bound by a pair of dCas9, luminescence is generated from the catalytic activity of luciferase in its entirety. In this detection system, sequence information (including complementary sequence and spacer sequence) and output signal amplification are obtained simultaneously.

CAS led-team develops full-color 3D meta holography with single nanostructured layer
The research team, led by Xiangang Luo from the State Key Laboratory of Optical Technologies on Nano-fabrication and Micro-engineering, CAS, and Minghui Hong’s team from Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, have demonstrated full-color 3D meta-holography imaging with extended viewing angles, realized by a single layer of nanostructured metallic surface. The usable data capacity and cross-talk limitations were improved and by using a single type of plasmonic pixel. This not only led to a remarkable image quality, with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) five times better than that of the previous meta-hologram designs, but to a full-color meta-holographic image in the 3D space, with pending applications in data storage, security, and authentication.
