US NSF sees Asian R&D advancing faster than the USA
According to a recent report issued by Kevin Droegemeister of the NSF, expenditore on R&D of East, Southeast and South Asia now accounts for 40 % of the global expenditure, of which the Chinese share is half. The share of the USA is still highest in the world with 27 % but diminishing gradually as the growth rate of China’s R&D investment is nearly 20 % per year.

Chinese Market Research estimates global stem cell medical market as 120 billion USD by 2018
Zhang Jian House, a Chinese market research company, estimates the global stem cell market size at US-$ 50 billion in 2014 and $ 119.5 billion in 2018. North America and Western Europe offer the largest market of stem cells and account for 44% and 38% market share, the Asia-Pacific region accounting for 17% of market share

According to the State IP Office, it received 1,1 million patent applications in 2015 (+18,7 %) and authorized 359.000 invention patents, of which 263.000 were of domestic origin.

Nanjing University group finds improved procedure for cartilage repair
In collaboration with Chinese colleagues in North Carolina, JIANG Qing at Nanjing University Medical School has developed a one-step method for cartilage repair. The technique is based on wrapping small organic molecules containing in a nano liquid holder, filled them into cartilage defects by microsurgery and apply UV irradiation for 30 seconds. This results in sustained-release of active components which after two months leads to repaired cartilage defects. Histology, morphology and biomechanics were close to natural cartilage.

In 2015 25 % of Chinese TCM manufacturers failed to pass GMP certification
According to China FDA, 500 out of 2000 inspected TCM producers failed to pass GMP certification and must discontinue sales. CFDA is pursuing a policy to implement GMP but also guarantee the market supply of drugs.

Beijing Sinovac Biotech Co. gets approval for a hand, foot and mouse disease (HFMD) vaccine
The “EV71 inactivated vaccine” of the company has received CFDA approval and may be the first commercial vaccine of this type in the world. By the end of 2015, HFMD disease caused by infection of enterovirus 71 had affected nearly 14 million victims in China, and infant mortality reached over 3300 cases. The group of ZHOU Qi has fused haploid stem cells from rat and mouse to produce diploid hybrid stem cells with a seemingly stable genome. Gene expression analysis showed that dissimilar heterozygous diploid cells exhibited high affinity”, “low affinity” and other unique gene expression patterns as well as unique biological traits.”

CAS Shenyang Institute of Applied Ecology develops novel bacterial fungicide fengycin
The fungicide, co-developed with Aino Co., is based on Bacillus methylotrophicus BAC-9912 which produces a lipopeptide antibiotic. If applied at concentrations of about 1 kg/ha, it prevents growth of Botrytis cinera and other fungi and is non-pathogenic to humans and animals.

China will land Chang’e-4 probe on the far side of the moon in 2018
Chang’e-3 achieved the first Chinese soft-landing on the moon in December 2013 and is still sending messages back to Earth. China also plans to launch its Chang’e-5 lunar probe to finish the last chapter in China’s three-step (orbiting, landing and return) moon exploration program.
