According to a survey by Nature Publishing Group, Chinese mainland came sixth among the top 100 countries and areas for scientific research outputs according to the NPI, following the USA,UK, Germany, Japan and France. Authors based in Chinese mainland contributed 8.5 % (303) of all research papers published in Nature research journals in 2012. China also had nine institutions in the top 200 research institutes – up from three in 2011.
