Coal-derived methanol is a new commodity in Western Chinese states such as Shanxi, and the government pushes the addition of methanol to car fuel. In the city of Jinzhong, 150 methanol taxis have made 5.8 million km in one year, consuming 700,000 liters of methanol. Addition of methanol is usually 15 % (M15) but cars must be modified, standards are missing and the number of filling stations is still limited.
