China operates large breeding programs and is a leader in hybrid technology, e. g. in “super rice” varieties which are cultivated on some 1 million mu (~70.000 ha). Transgenic cotton is planted on 4,6 million mu (~300.000 ha), and disease-resistant high-quality wheat, rice, vegetables and other crops of more than 200 new varieties have been planted on more than two million acres (~800.000 ha).
