The world’s total soybean production is 338.8 million tons, of which non-genetically modified soybean is 54 million tons (15%). 25% of the world’s non-GM soybeans are produced in China. China’s demand is 86 million tons of soybean imports. So the import of genetically modified soybeans is inevitable. Productivity of US genetically modified soybean is 176 kg/mu, whereas China’s main soybean-producing province Heilongjiang achieves around 130 kg/mu. In order to change this situation, the Chinese government promotes independent research and development of transgenic technology, but the public opinion is skeptical.
